Using the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program to Support Student Learning
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (known as FFVP) provides a fruit or vegetable snack to children at low-income elementary schools during the school day. The goal of the FFVP is to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables, to include new and different varieties, and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children. FFVP also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition education. In participating schools, 90% of parents, teachers, and principals say they enjoy the program and would like to see it continue, but Utah has a very low participation rate. In this session, you'll learn more about how FFVP works and how to apply. You'll also hear from a rural elementary principal and kitchen manager on how they successfully run FFVP in their schools, and get to sample some of the unique fruits and vegetables available through the program.

Pride & Prevention - Strengthening School Climate & Early Prevention Efforts
Are you in Proactive-mode, or Reaction-mode? Are you engaged in Prevention, or waiting for crisis, and then intervening? Are you actively connecting to students, or waiting for them to reach out to you? It's time to set aside ineffective strategies, and implement the best prevention, intervention, and postvention tool available!
What's the benefit to you? Less behavioral issues. Students are more engaged in curriculum. Early detection and prevention reduces crisis. Students feel supported and connected, thus raising the overall climate at your school.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for teens in Utah! Over 44% of youth reported they persistently felt sad or hopeless during the past year! The CDC states "a sense of being cared for, supported, and belonging at school—called 'school connectedness'—had an important effect on students during a time of severe disruption." What are you doing to help your students feel cared for, supported, and like they belong? What solutions are available? Join me and take home a tool that you can implement right away, at no extra burden to your staff. See you here.

How Do Youth Really Feel about Mental Health in Schools?
How Do Youth Really Feel about Mental Health in Schools? A Youth Panel Discussion - The purpose of this presentation is to help schools enhance early identification and responses to students with mental health/substance use challenges, connect them to appropriate services, and support these students to achieve their maximum potential while experiencing mental illness/substance use.

Mentally healthy students free from substance use are more likely to learn and engage in school activities. First onset of mental disorders usually occurs in childhood or adolescence. However, most cases are undetected and untreated for years. Substance use is generally initiated in adolescence or early adulthood. Early onset correlates with high risk for psychosocial problems at home and schools. The pandemic and the associated stress have only worsened the well-being of our children and youth.

Expected outcomes are to learn:
1. Youth's perspective on mental health in school
2. What issues youth are currently facing
3. The importance of advocacy

A panel of youth with lived experiences of mental health/substance use disorders will discuss their perspectives on what had helped and harmed them while they were in schools and recommendations for school staff to better support them. Youth will discuss what mental health looks like for them and how advocacy can play a role in their mental health journey.

Rethinking School Discipline: A Restorative Approach
The International Institute of Restorative Practices posits that the fundamental hypothesis of restorative practices is that human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive and more likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them. A restorative approach to discipline focuses on restoring the relationship between an offender and his/her community through collaboration and rehabilitation of mindset and behavior. A major flaw of traditional disciplinary practices is that it addresses only behavior, a symptom of, but not the root of, the issues that manifest as problematic behavior. Pairing a cognitive behavioral approach with restorative practices, schools can more effectively and compassionately address underlying self-defeating thinking patterns, thus addressing the root of the issue. And more importantly, we allow our students to be part of their own process of change, thus creating lasting change. Recent research published by the IIRP attests to this: restorative practices in schools reduced suspensions and serious infractions by an average of 65%, reduced aggression by 26% and improved social skills by 20%. May we suggest that we collectively rethink our approach to school discipline, and shift into a more restorative one.
