Using the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program to Support Student Learning
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (known as FFVP) provides a fruit or vegetable snack to children at low-income elementary schools during the school day. The goal of the FFVP is to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables, to include new and different varieties, and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children. FFVP also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition education. In participating schools, 90% of parents, teachers, and principals say they enjoy the program and would like to see it continue, but Utah has a very low participation rate. In this session, you'll learn more about how FFVP works and how to apply. You'll also hear from a rural elementary principal and kitchen manager on how they successfully run FFVP in their schools, and get to sample some of the unique fruits and vegetables available through the program.

What Does Coherence Look Like? Teaching Mathematics with Meaning
The Utah Core standards say that students must “experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.” Unfortunately, current U.S. textbook structures and traditional images of instruction mean that most students instead experience mathematics as a disconnected set of facts devoid of meaning.

In this workshop we will briefly discuss some key information from mathematics education research framing the problem and steps we can take to address key issues. We will spend most of the time engaged in an exploration of trigonometry with a focus on meaning and connections across ideas. [But don't worry! You don't need to know anything about trigonometry to participate - all of the ideas we will use will be built up through hands-on activities.] This example will serve as a model for the kinds of lessons and units students need to reengage with mathematics and thrive.

How Do Youth Really Feel about Mental Health in Schools?
How Do Youth Really Feel about Mental Health in Schools? A Youth Panel Discussion - The purpose of this presentation is to help schools enhance early identification and responses to students with mental health/substance use challenges, connect them to appropriate services, and support these students to achieve their maximum potential while experiencing mental illness/substance use.

Mentally healthy students free from substance use are more likely to learn and engage in school activities. First onset of mental disorders usually occurs in childhood or adolescence. However, most cases are undetected and untreated for years. Substance use is generally initiated in adolescence or early adulthood. Early onset correlates with high risk for psychosocial problems at home and schools. The pandemic and the associated stress have only worsened the well-being of our children and youth.

Expected outcomes are to learn:
1. Youth's perspective on mental health in school
2. What issues youth are currently facing
3. The importance of advocacy

A panel of youth with lived experiences of mental health/substance use disorders will discuss their perspectives on what had helped and harmed them while they were in schools and recommendations for school staff to better support them. Youth will discuss what mental health looks like for them and how advocacy can play a role in their mental health journey.

Integrating Early Literacy and Numeracy Curriculum in Play-Based Learning
Developmentally appropriate, play-based learning is the most effective teaching and learning method for early childhood education classrooms. In this session, we will explore resources available to educators in the Utah Early Learning Core Standards and the Early Learning Standards Strategies and Activities documents. These resources can be used to plan for effective and engaging learning experiences in the classroom with a specific focus on meeting literacy and numeracy standards. Fostering Adolescent Reading Motivation & Engagement
If you’ve spent any time in a secondary classroom, you know that motivation and engagement really matters, especially when it comes to reading, but finding that sweet spot with all of your students can be challenging. Research shows that reading and reading achievement among secondary students is connected closely to motivation (Guthrie, 2008). However, many students’ motivation to read often begins to decline in their elementary school years—particularly for those who struggled learning to read (McKenna, Kear, & Ellsworth, 1995). Although you may value principles of motivation, it is important to recognize that motivation doesn't just organically result from meaningful instruction. Rather, we need to intentionally embed principles of motivation into our pedagogical approaches. This session will ask you to examine practices that may lead to decreased student motivation and provide ways to engage students in meaningful reading experiences.

Embracing Authentic Learning Experiences: Assessing Students in Multiple Ways
Experts suggest that the ability to create, explore, and innovate will be essential tools for success in our changing world. Iconic Problems: Facilitating Deep Exploration in Mathematics Even When You Feel You Don’t Have Time
Professional organizations such as NCTM, MAA, AMATYC, NSF, AMA, etc. are all calling for changes to students' mathematical experiences including inquiry-based lessons, deep engagement with mathematics, and coherent connections across lessons. However, research confirms that most U.S. students instead experience an incoherent approach to learning mathematics that privileges teachers’ solutions and textbook algorithms over students’ reasoning and construction of meaning. In many cases, teachers believe that they cannot change this reality because of high pressure to cover a high number of topics.

One way to facilitate deep exploration that allows you to still cover a large number of topics and in a more meaningful way is with “iconic problems”. An iconic problem is rich mathematical context useful for introducing a number of mathematical topics. In this session we will explore examples of iconic problems and discuss how to use them to rethink how we introduce new ideas in our math classrooms.

What Are We Supposed to Do About Homework?
Homework can be an effective tool to increase student learning, but it can just as easily be detrimental, misleading, and unjust if administered poorly. Many teachers grade piles of homework despite not knowing who did it. Further complicating the issue is that some students have immense supports at home and others have no home at all. We need to establish the purpose for homework and then build support structures that address plagiarism, personalized learning needs, and socio-economic inequality. Homework can be effective within a standards-based grading model, but a critical look at our systems is long overdue. This session will tackle real-life examples of replacement routines that transform homework as we know it.

From Passenger to Co-Pilot: Practical Ways to Assess WITH Our Students
For far too long, assessment is what we have done to students, not with them. Perhaps we could take a page from tactical teams and first responders. Navy SEALs practice ‘Decentralized Command’ – that every team member must understand not just what to do, but why they are doing it. Firefighters around the world are familiar with ‘Span of Control’, that in a complex and changing environment, a single leader cannot effectively manage more than about 7 people at one time. If these principles are true for emergency situations, they likely spill over into learning environments. In fact, research suggests the extent to which students perceive assessment to be authentic, formative for teachers, and not reliant on external factors, the more they will engage in it. Other research suggests that student self-reporting is one of the powerful forces in education. Considering the potential power of student's voice, this interactive presentation will focus on practical ways that we can invite students into the assessment realm as co-pilots rather than disinterested passengers. Join ASCD author, administrator, and teacher, Myron Dueck for a session featuring his new book, ‘Giving Students a Say – Smarter Assessment Practices to Empower and Engage.’ Key topics will include:

·      Sharing and co-creating learning targets based on standards.
·      Helping students understand and use performance assessments (rubrics).
·      Considering the right scale: proficiency levels vs 100 categories (percentage)
· Student self-reporting – on academics, behaviors & personal insights

Supporting Paraeducators through Power Professional Learning That Supports Student Success
Paraeducators provide critical support for students by addressing learning gaps and providing important interventions to ensure progress and growth. However, paraeducators are often on their own when it comes to implementing these strategies and using existing resources to support student success. In this interactive session, participants will learn about a year-long professional learning design that supports paraeducators to deepen their understanding of the Utah Standards for Instructional Paraeducators, improve instructional practices, and increase collaboration between paraeducators and classroom teachers that leads to improved outcomes for students.

Specifically, participants will learn about the tools and strategies that support paraeducators to increase competence and confidence in:

Supporting a positive student-centered learning environment

Using appropriate pacing in small group settings

Implementing effective instructional strategies and engagement strategies, particularly in small group setting

Communicating with teachers, including feedback on student performance

Participants will have time to identify strategies for designing effective professional learning for paraeducators in their own settings, including sample tools and templates used to inform ongoing professional learning.

Supporting Powerful Collaboration using the Collaboration Self-Assessment Tool
The benefits of collaboration for improving teaching and learning have long been promoted as schools and districts across the country have implemented professional learning communities as a strategy to ensure high levels of student success. The many benefits of effective collaboration include, but are not limited to, improved teacher collective efficacy, less isolation, increased professional satisfaction, increased confidence, increased student achievement, increased positive attitudes, higher levels of trust, increased creativity, increased retention. Now more than ever we must support educators to realize the promise of effective, powerful collaboration. In this interactive session participants will learn about the Collaboration Self-Assessment (CSA). This research-based tool examines the qualities of effective and powerful collaboration related to the following dimensions:

* Capacity Building
* Empowerment
* Intentional
* Improvement-Focused
* Inquiry-Based
* Collective Responsibility

Within each collaboration dimension are indicators one would see in practice.

In this session participants will learn about how school teams use the results from the CSA to assess the qualities of their collaborative culture and to identify strengths, as well as areas for continued growth and improvement. Participants will have the chance to explore the tool and the ways in which results are shared back with school teams in an online data dashboard that highlights the aggregated results from all participants. Participants will have the chance to identify how this tool could be used in their own settings to explore areas of collaboration to cultivate and identify action steps.

Time for a Coaching Tune Up
Coaching guru Atul Gawande claims, "Coaching done well may be the most effective intervention designed for human performance." Over the last decade, instructional coaching has become increasingly common in schools. Many schools enjoy the benefits of a well-run coaching program that builds the capacity of teachers, teams, and leaders. Unfortunately, other schools coaching efforts are clunking along, in serious need of a coaching tune-up. Let’s take a minute to pull instructional coaching out of the proverbial garage and give it a basic tune-up. This session is designed to help schools perform any needed tightening, aligning, or lubricating so that coaching can enjoy a smooth ride.

Arts Access for Rural and Other Underserved Populations
Arts advocacy comes in many forms whether occurring within our classroom, school, district or more broadly. It is shaped by the needs and desires of our learners as well as those of the larger community. Utah Arts Education Association (UAEA) provides the scaffolding to build advocacy by bringing together individuals specifically focused on creating art learning experiences.

In this presentation, we will demonstrate how advocacy can happen in a variety of environments, and, most importantly, it is something all educators, not just art teachers, can build into their practice. We propose creating advocacy systems that can be implemented across any level. We would like to share two important impact areas using hands-on, arts-integrated activities accessible to all participants.

Arts Education Relationships and Advocacy at Different Levels - We will show how to harness a variety of arts, cultural, political, and commercial organizations to broaden access to art learning across content areas. Our "Clouds" lesson and hands-on activity will demonstrate how the arts can be integrated across a variety of content areas.

Getting Arts Education and Arts Awareness into the Public Sphere - When art is integrated into communities, it helps to cultivate a student’s experience and teach them that art is a powerful tool in their life. Our second "All in for Art" hands-on activity will demonstrate how we can harness the arts to provide a creative voice beyond the classroom.

Creative Backbone: Promoting Learning not a Tool
One of the unfortunate side effects of adding technology to our classroom is that we focus less on learning and more on integrating the technology into our classrooms. This session flips that script and pushes creativity and learning to the forefront of technology integration. Throughout this session we will explore 3-5 simple scalable learning experiences using existing classroom tools like paper, pens, and tape with just a small slice of Google Workspace for Edu added into overall process. These activities include:

- Creating a Zine to show student learning
- Quick prototyped dioramas for writing processes
- Scrap pages for formative assessment
- Note Clothes
- Crafting Comics

Teachers will leave with activities they can use day one of the 2022-2023 school year that foreground creativity and learning within the technology integration process.

Harnessing the Power of Afterschool and Summer Programs
Afterschool and summer programs are often overlooked but powerful elements of a systems approach to supporting student success. Afterschool and summer programs can offer important strategies for addressing gaps in student learning and providing effective interventions. In this interactive session, participants will engage in a collaborative discussion about how they can use a continuous improvement cycle to harness the power of afterschool and summer programs using student and program data. Using the four essential elements of the cycle—engage, design, implement, and adjust—participants will explore new tools, strategies, and resources to help them collect, analyze, and use data to make necessary adjustments to student and program services and desired outcomes. Through this process participants will discuss what it means to develop a culture of data within their afterschool and summer programs and make data a part of everyday decisions, including opportunities to align with the regular school day programs. Participants will leave this session with action plans to implement when they return to their schools/organizations, including next steps, timelines, and additional resources needed.

Supporting "Cultural Competence" in K12 Educators
Utah principals know that high quality instruction that mirrors the demographics of the learners they steward leads to improved student outcomes, particularly for learners who may be at-risk. Many schools throughout the Intermountain West reflect a percentage of minority teachers and administrators much below the level of their minority learners. Because these chasms exist, Utah’s teachers and leaders must make extraordinary efforts to understand and include their learners’ backgrounds and experiences into their classroom climate and culture to ensure that their unconscious and implicit biases and values do not negatively impede their learner’s education.

The Power of Patterns and Themes in ELA and Social Studies Classrooms
Social Studies and ELA are ripe for collaborative opportunities but so often we silo these disciplines into separate spheres in both elementary and secondary settings. This session will engage teachers in planning instruction through the lens of literary themes, historical patterns, Utah’s Portrait of a Graduate competencies, and Utah core standards. We will collaboratively work to make connections between historical patterns such as power or perspective and literary themes like identity or survival. We will then connect these patterns and themes to Utah’s Portrait of a Graduate competencies like hard work and resilience. This approach helps students ask deeper questions, make meaningful connections to themselves and the world, and also build their literacy and historical critical thinking skills. Participants will leave with the skills to build and use rich text sets – including novels, picture books, primary sources, and nonfiction – that are connected to these themes and develop student skills.

Using Quick Diagnostic Interviews to Elicit Evidence of Student Understanding
Current data available to teachers do not always specify student learning needs at a deep enough level needed for teachers to know how to respond. In this interactive session, participants will experience a process and tools for administering quick Diagnostic Interviews (DI) to identify student gaps in concepts and skills that can be used to respond to student learning needs during Tier 1 Instruction. The 3–5-minute DI focuses on student thinking more deeply than typical data currently available. If your school has collaborative teacher teams, such as Professional Learning Communities (PLC), strategies and tools will be shared showing how to integrate the interview data into PLC planning conversations making it easier to differentiate upcoming units of study and daily lessons to meet each student’s unique learning needs.

Learning goals for the session include the following:
* Identify a process for conducting a quick Diagnostic Interview
* Practice using the DI
* Explore samples of student work resulting from the DI
* Create ways you can integrate the DI into your context and/or PLC.

Participants will leave the session with the following products:
* Diagnostic Interview Process
* Diagnostic Interview Probing Questions
* Samples of Student Work
* Protocol for Integrating Data into PLCs
* Checklist for Applying to Your Context
