Your Students Get SOEP Courses, Your School Keeps Full WPU
Since the passing of HB 417 last month, high schools with fewer than 1,000 students can keep full WPU any time their students enroll in an any SOEP course. The cost of the SOEP course will be covered by the state, without impacting the school's WPU for that student. Starting in Fall 22, your students can sign up for an online class with a UT certified teacher to accelerate their progress, remediate a credit, or take an elective that interests them. Further, your school can partner with ASU Prep Digital Powered by Juab School District to offer an online version of a course to your students that you have not been able to staff on-site. In this session, we'll talk about the steps for students to enroll in a free online course, what they can expect from the course and teacher, and how ASU Prep Digital and Juab School District have worked together to ensure high student achievement alongside academic integrity.

Utah Microcredentials: Earn Credits and Endorsements for Your Self-Directed Learning!
Educators are self-directed learners, continually developing new skills and finding innovative ways improving their practice. The Utah Microcredentials System recognizes this and provides educators with an opportunity to earn USBE credits for these self-directed efforts.

Additionally, for the first time, you can now use microcredentials to earn USBE teaching endorsements! Beginning in 2022, Utah teachers can demonstrate competencies with microcredentials as an alternative to taking courses.

Come learn how to earn microcredentials, how to become a stipended microcredential reviewer, and how to participate in the creation of new microcredentials for other educators to earn!

A microcredential, also known as a badge, is a digital form of certification. It represents an educator’s demonstration of effective and consistent use of the target skill or concept as a part of instructional practice. Any educator in Utah’s public education system can earn microcredentials, including classroom teachers, instructional coaches, counselors, administrators, etc. Earning a microcredential provides the educator with three things: visible recognition of demonstrated competency, leadership opportunities, and USBE credit.

Creative Backbone: Promoting Learning not a Tool
One of the unfortunate side effects of adding technology to our classroom is that we focus less on learning and more on integrating the technology into our classrooms. This session flips that script and pushes creativity and learning to the forefront of technology integration. Throughout this session we will explore 3-5 simple scalable learning experiences using existing classroom tools like paper, pens, and tape with just a small slice of Google Workspace for Edu added into overall process. These activities include:

- Creating a Zine to show student learning
- Quick prototyped dioramas for writing processes
- Scrap pages for formative assessment
- Note Clothes
- Crafting Comics

Teachers will leave with activities they can use day one of the 2022-2023 school year that foreground creativity and learning within the technology integration process.

The Power of Patterns and Themes in ELA and Social Studies Classrooms
Social Studies and ELA are ripe for collaborative opportunities but so often we silo these disciplines into separate spheres in both elementary and secondary settings. This session will engage teachers in planning instruction through the lens of literary themes, historical patterns, Utah’s Portrait of a Graduate competencies, and Utah core standards. We will collaboratively work to make connections between historical patterns such as power or perspective and literary themes like identity or survival. We will then connect these patterns and themes to Utah’s Portrait of a Graduate competencies like hard work and resilience. This approach helps students ask deeper questions, make meaningful connections to themselves and the world, and also build their literacy and historical critical thinking skills. Participants will leave with the skills to build and use rich text sets – including novels, picture books, primary sources, and nonfiction – that are connected to these themes and develop student skills.
